Early Life and Education
Gertsen Isaevich Kopilov was born in 1925 in Kamenskoe, Ukraine, into a working-class family. In 1949, he graduated from the physics faculty of Moscow State University.
Scientific Career
Following his graduation, Kopilov worked as a teacher and technician before joining the Laboratory of High Energies at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna in 1955. His research focused on applied relativistic kinematics, the development of theory and methodology for simulating multiparticle reactions in high-energy physics, and the interferometry of identical particles (Bose-Einstein correlations).
In 1967, Kopilov earned his doctorate in physics and mathematics. His acclaimed monograph, "Fundamentals of Resonance Kinematics," became a cornerstone for experimental physicists in elementary particle physics.
Literary Pursuits
Alongside his scientific work, Kopilov pursued literary endeavors from 1949. He authored nonconformist satirical poems, including the "folklore" novel in verse "Eugene Stromynkin" (1949-1956) and the "Four-Dimensional Poem" (1964-1972).
Dissidence and Legacy
Kopilov's literary activities often reflected his nonconformist views and critique of the Soviet system. He played a significant role in translating Richard Feynman's famous "Lectures on Physics" into Russian.
