Hilda West: The Oldest Tattooed Woman in Britain

A Tattoo at 94

At the age of 94, Hilda West became the oldest person in the UK to willingly receive a tattoo. She inked the initials of her beloved late husband on her wrist, commemorating their joyful marriage.

Age Is No Barrier for Ink

The notion that tattoos are reserved for the young is challenged by Hilda West, a widow, grandmother, and great-grandmother from Kenilworth, Warwickshire. With her wits about her, West decided to "go under the needle" as a special tribute to her deceased husband, Ernest, on his birthday.

A Sentimental Gesture

Now a resident of Castle Brook Care Home, Hilda lost Ernest in 2014 after 70 years of marriage. She also outlived her son, David. She approached a local tattoo parlor and expressed her wish: "It would have been Ernest's birthday this month, and I wanted to do something special to mark it."

Surprising the Tattoo Artist

Assisted by her carers to the tattoo parlor, Hilda's request astounded tattoo artist Matty Gardner. Touched by her story, he offered to ink her free of charge. "It was very smooth," West reported. "I didn't feel any pain at all. Matty did a great job. I was so pleased."

Cherished Memories

On her wrist, two delicate hearts now adorn Hilda's skin, one with her husband's initials and the other with his son's. "I look at them every day and think about my husband and my son," she said. "But I'm not stopping at initials. I'd like to get a tattoo of a butterfly or a peacock."

A Meaningful Moment

Gardner, owner of Ink on Skinz tattoo parlor, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to make a difference. "It's nice to know you've done something nice for someone," he said. "I've tattooed older people before, but not anyone quite that age. It was quite unusual."

Exceptional Client

The entire process took just 20 minutes. According to Matty, Hilda endured the procedure better than some bodybuilders he had tattooed in the past.
