Biography of Horst Lorenz Seehofer

Early Life and Education

Horst Lorenz Seehofer, a German politician, was born on July 4, 1949, in Ingolstadt, Germany. He came from a working-class family and worked his way up the ranks. In 1967, he graduated from the Bavarian School of Administration in Munich. He began his career in government in 1970 with a degree in public administration.

Political Career

Seehofer became a member of the German Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, in 1980. From 1992 to 1998, under Chancellor Helmut Kohl's government, Seehofer held the position of Federal Minister of Health and Social Security. In October 1998, he became the deputy chairman of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany and the Christian Social Union in the Bundestag.

Due to his disagreement with a unified payment rate in the federal healthcare system, Seehofer resigned from his position on November 22, 2004, but remained the deputy chairman of the Christian Social Union and kept his mandate. Since joining the Bundestag, Seehofer maintained his mandate as a directly elected delegate from his constituency of Ingolstadt. In the 2005 federal elections, he received 65.9 percent of the votes in his electoral district.

In 2005, Seehofer was appointed Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection in Angela Merkel's government and served in this position until 2008. On October 25, 2008, he was approved as the new chairman of the Christian Social Union, receiving 90 percent of the votes at the party convention. Two days later, Seehofer was elected the Prime Minister of Bavaria, forming the first coalition government in Bavaria since 1962.

Personal Life

Horst Seehofer stands at a height of 192 cm. He is married for the second time to Karen Seehofer, and they have three children together. Additionally, the Prime Minister has an illegitimate daughter from a former employee of the Bundestag.
