Horst Tappert: A German Television and Film Actor

Horst Tappert was a German television and film actor, screenwriter, and director, best known for his portrayal of the legendary Inspector Stephan Derrick in the iconic detective television series "Derrick". He was born on May 26, 1923, in Elberfeld, Germany (now Wuppertal). Tappert's father was a civil servant. After finishing high school, Horst joined the German army and was sent to the Eastern Front, where he became a prisoner of war. He remained a POW until the end of the war and then returned to his homeland, finding a job as an accountant in a theater in the Saxon town of Stendal.

A Journey into Acting

Gradually, Tappert developed an interest in theater, even though he had not shown such inclination before. He became fascinated with the idea of trying his hand at acting. Taking acting lessons, he made his stage debut at the same theater in Stendal, portraying Dr. Stiebel in Paul Helwig's play "Die Flitterwochen" (The Honeymoon). In the following years, Tappert performed in several different theaters until he settled at the Kammerspiele theater in Munich in 1956. From 1967 onwards, he did not have any exclusive contracts with theaters, which remained the case until his death.

A Leap into Film and Television

In the late 1950s, Tappert made his first appearances in films and television programs. His breakthrough came in 1966 when he landed the role of Michael Donegan, a robber of post offices, in a television show. In 1968, he switched to the "good side" by portraying Detective Perkins from Scotland Yard in a film. In 1973, when the second public television channel in Germany, ZDF, planned to shoot a new detective series and was in search of an actor for the leading role, they entrusted the role of Inspector Stephan Derrick to Tappert. His friend and assistant, Harry Klein, was played by Fritz Wepper. The calm and meticulous Derrick became a cult figure. This series was broadcast in 104 countries and gained immense popularity in Japan, China, and Italy. Even Pope John Paul II was among the distinguished fans of Inspector Derrick. Over 25 years, from 1974 to 1997, a total of 281 episodes were filmed. The final episode of "Derrick" was shot when Tappert was already 75 years old and decided it was enough. The role of Derrick brought Tappert numerous awards and immense popularity, but few people today remember that besides Derrick, he played more than 70 roles in movies and on TV.

Personal Life and Legacy

Horst Tappert was married three times. Two of his marriages ended in divorce, but he spent over half a century with his third wife, Ursula, formerly known as Pistor. Tappert had three children. His hobbies included hunting and fishing. The actor passed away on December 13, 2008, after a prolonged illness, at a hospital in Munich. In his final years, he lived a very reclusive life and even distanced himself from his own family members.
