Early Life and Rise to ProminenceJosé Manuel Moreno was born on August 3, 1916, in Argentina. From a young age, he displayed exceptional football skills and quickly established himself as a formidable striker. Club Career
Moreno's professional career spanned two decades, during which he played for numerous clubs in Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia. He made his debut with Estrella de Brandsen in 1930 and went on to represent River Plate, Real España, Universidad Católica, Boca Juniors, Defensor, Ferrocarril Oeste, and Vasco de Gama. He retired as a player-coach for Independiente Medellín in Colombia in 1960.
International Career
Moreno made his international debut for Argentina in 1936 and played 34 matches for his country, scoring 19 goals. He was part of the team that won the Copa América in 1941 and 1947 and finished second in 1942. Moreno's absence from the 1938 World Cup and subsequent international tournaments due to internal conflicts and World War II left a significant void in his illustrious career.
Playing Style and Achievements
Moreno was a versatile and dynamic forward known for his exceptional dribbling skills, vision, and goalscoring prowess. He was equally adept at playing on the left wing or as a center forward. Moreno won 11 national league top scorer awards and is credited with scoring over 850 goals in his career, including 224 in first division leagues.

In 2004, the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) ranked him as the 5th greatest South American footballer and 25th greatest footballer of all time.
Personal Life and Later Years
Moreno was a charismatic figure on and off the pitch. He was a heartthrob and a favorite of women, often serenaded with chants of "Moreno, Moreno." After retiring from football, he pursued a successful acting career and even directed a film. In his later years, Moreno suffered from health issues and passed away on August 26, 1978, at the age of 62.
