Hoshyar Zebari: Prominent Kurdish Politician and Diplomat
Hoshyar Zebari is a prominent Iraqi-Kurdish politician and diplomat. He has served as a member of the Politburo of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iraq.
Family and Education
Zebari is the son of a tribal chief and related to the then-KDP leader, Masoud Barzani. He studied sociology at the University of Essex in the United Kingdom and in Jordan.
Early Career
In the 1980s, Zebari fought with the Peshmerga forces. In the 1990s, he represented the KDP in the United Kingdom and the United States. Within the KDP, he headed the international relations department, essentially serving as the informal foreign minister of Iraqi Kurdistan.
Rise to Prominence
In 2003, Zebari became a member of the Iraqi Governing Council. A year later, he was appointed as the interim Minister of Foreign Affairs and was subsequently confirmed in the position.
Resignation and Subsequent Roles
On July 11, 2014, Zebari and other Kurdish officials resigned from the government in protest against accusations of terrorism support following the Islamic State's advances in northern Iraq. On October 18, 2014, he was appointed as Iraq's Minister of Finance.
However, his tenure in that role was short-lived. On September 21, 2016, the Iraqi parliament voted to dismiss Zebari from his position due to allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
