Early Life and Education
Jacques Lang was born into a Jewish family in Nancy, France, on March 2, 1939. His parents were Roger Lang and Marie-Luce Boucher. He studied at the prestigious Sciences Po Paris, where he earned degrees in political science and public law.
Theater and Arts Advocacy
After completing his education, Lang became heavily involved in the arts and culture. He co-founded the Nancy Peace Festival and the Union of European Theaters. From 1963 to 1972, he served as the director of the Theater University of Nancy, and from 1972 to 1974, he was the director of the Palais des Chaillot theater.
Academic Career
In addition to his work in the theater, Lang pursued an academic career. He taught international law at the University of Nancy from 1986 to 1988 and 1993 to 1995. He also taught at the University Paris X - Nanterre.
Family Life
In 1961, Lang married Monique Buchinski. They had two daughters, including actress Valérie Lang (1966-2013).
Political Career
Lang's political career began in 1977 when he was elected to the National Assembly as a Socialist deputy. He held several prominent ministerial positions, including Minister of Culture (1981-1986, 1988-1993) and Minister of Education (1992-1993, 2000-2002).
European Parliament and Paris Mayoral Candidacy
From 1994 to 1997, Lang served as a member of the European Parliament, representing France. In 2000, he ran for mayor of Paris.
