Walther Wever: A German Luftwaffe General Colonel
Childhood and Early Military CareerWalther Wever was born in 1884. On September 27, 1904, he joined the Imperial Army and was assigned to the artillery.
World War I
With the outbreak of World War I, Wever served as a lieutenant in the 1st Westphalian Field Artillery Regiment. He was severely wounded on September 7, 1914, and spent several months recovering. Promoted to captain on January 27, 1915, he later commanded a battery and served on the staff.
Interwar Period
After the war, Wever joined the Freikorps but returned to the army in 1920. He served as a company commander until early 1927, when he transferred to the Ministry of Defense. On July 1, 1927, he was promoted to major.
Air Defense Career
In 1934, Wever became Inspector of Anti-Aircraft Defense. Later that year, he commanded the Anti-Aircraft Artillery and Air Defense of the 2nd Military District. He became major general in August 1936.
On April 1, 1938, Wever was transferred to command the Air Defense of the 3rd Military District (Berlin), along with his promotion to lieutenant general. In October 1939, he was promoted to general of anti-aircraft artillery and commanded the 1st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Corps.
World War II
The 1st Corps participated in the French Campaign in 1940, defending advancing troops from Allied bombing raids. On July 19, 1940, Wever was promoted to general colonel and awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. From 1941, he served as General Staff Officer of the Air Defense.
Chief of Air Defense
Following the heavy Allied bombing of Germany, Wever was appointed Chief of the Air Defense of the Reich on January 6, 1944, replacing the criticized Hans-Jürgen Stumpff.
