Vasili Yakovlevich Ovander: A Distinguished Russian General
Early Life and Military BeginningsVasili Yakovlevich Ovander was born on November 15, 1790, into a merchant family. He embarked on his military career during the Patriotic War of 1812, joining the Pernovsky Grenadier Regiment.
Foreign Campaigns and Officer's Rank
Ovander participated in the Foreign Campaigns of 1813 and 1814. In 1813, he was promoted to officer rank and transferred to the Leib-Guard Jaeger Regiment the following year. In 1818, he joined the Leib-Guard Volyn Infantry Regiment.
Senior Command and Imperial Service
Promotion to Colonel and Fligel AdjutantIn 1824, Ovander ascended to the rank of colonel. Five years later, he became Fligel Adjutant to His Imperial Majesty.
Distinguished Service during the Polish Campaign
For his bravery in the Polish Campaign of 1831, Ovander was promoted to Major General in October and appointed commander of the Leib-Guard Volyn Regiment. He subsequently commanded the 6th Infantry Guard Brigade.
Order of St. George and Other Honors
On December 6, 1836, Ovander received the Order of St. George, 4th class, for his 25 years of service as an officer. The following year, he was awarded the Order of St. Anna, 1st class.
Chief of Staff and Divisional Commander
In 1842, Ovander was appointed Chief of Staff of the 4th Infantry Corps. Soon after, on April 4, 1843, he was promoted to Lieutenant General and became commander of the 3rd Grenadier Division. He held this position until January 1846, when he was named Chief of the 3rd Guard Division.
Role in the Crimean War and Retirement
During the Crimean War of 1853-1856, Ovander was appointed commander of the 4th Army Corps and temporarily deployed to the front. However, his declining health forced him to return to St. Petersburg. In July 1855, he was enrolled in the reserve forces.
Decorations and Legacy
Throughout his 43 years of service, Ovander received numerous decorations, including all orders up to and including the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky, bestowed upon him in 1852. He passed away in St. Petersburg on November 15, 1855, at the age of 65.
