Early Life and EducationBorn in New York City on November 14, 1940, Hugo F. Sonnenschein excelled academically. He attended the University of Rochester from 1957 to 1961, then earned a Master's degree from Purdue University in 1963. In 1964, he received his PhD in Economics from Purdue University.
Academic Career
Professor and TheoristSonnenschein's prestigious career spanned several universities. From 1964 to 1970, he taught Economics at the University of Minnesota. He then moved to the University of Massachusetts for three years, followed by Northwestern University from 1973 to 1976. From 1976 to 1988, he taught at Princeton University.
As a distinguished professor, Sonnenschein specialized in microeconomic theory at the University of Chicago, where he currently serves as Professor Emeritus. His research interests focused on game theory and the mathematical structures of market demand functions.
Administrative Roles
Sonnenschein also held several administrative positions in higher education. He served as President of the University of Chicago from 1993 to 2000. Prior to that, he held the role of Provost at Princeton University from 1991 to 1993 and Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania from 1988 to 1991.
Honors and Awards
Sonnenschein's academic achievements earned him numerous honors and awards. He was elected a member of the Econometric Society in 1973 and served as its President from 1988 to 1989. In 1984, he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1990 and joined the American Philosophical Society in 2001. In 2005, he was named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association.
Personal Life
Hugo F. Sonnenschein is married to Dr. Elizabeth "Beth" Gunn Sonnenschein, an epidemiologist specializing in cancer. They met as undergraduates at the University of Rochester in 1957 and have three daughters and five grandchildren.
