Hugo Viana: A Career Overview
Early Career at Sporting CP and Newcastle UnitedHugo Viana, a Portuguese attacking midfielder, began his professional career with Sporting CP in Lisbon. He rose to prominence in 2002 when he was named Europe's Best Young Footballer of the Year. This accolade caught the attention of Newcastle United, who acquired him for €12 million. During his two seasons at St. James' Park, Viana struggled to establish himself as a regular starter and was loaned back to Sporting CP.
Stints at Valencia and Osasuna
In January 2005, Viana joined Valencia on loan. The Spanish club eventually made his transfer permanent for €2.25 million. However, fierce competition from established midfielders such as Rubén Baraja and David Albelda limited his playing time, leading to another loan spell at Osasuna.
Injury Setback and Return to Sporting CP
Viana's hopes of resurrecting his career at Osasuna were dealt a major setback when he suffered a severe injury. The lengthy rehabilitation process kept him sidelined for almost four months. Upon his return, he struggled to regain his form and was limited to appearances in domestic cup competitions.
International Career with Portugal
Viana made his debut for the Portuguese national team in November 2001. He played a significant role in the country's victorious UEFA Euro 2012 campaign, helping the Seleção das Quinas secure a bronze medal.
