Hunter Biden: A Controversial Figure in American Politics
Early Life and EducationHunter Biden was born on February 4, 1970, in Wilmington, Delaware. He is the son of former Vice President Joe Biden and his first wife, Neilia Hunter. In 1972, Neilia and his sister were tragically killed in a car accident, while Hunter and his brother, Beau, sustained serious injuries. Hunter later graduated from Georgetown University with a bachelor's degree and went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School.
Career in Finance and Lobbying
After graduating from Yale, Hunter Biden immediately secured a lucrative position at MBNA America Bank, earning over $100,000 per year. Less than two years later, he became a senior executive vice president at the company, raising concerns about nepotism. In 1998, he was appointed as the director of electronic commerce at the U.S. Department of Commerce through the connections of William Oldaker, a lawyer who worked on Biden's father's campaign.
Hunter Biden transitioned into lobbying, specializing in "earmarks" (small amendments added to larger legislation that benefit specific corporate clients). He claimed to have an unspoken rule with his father, where he would not ask about his son's clients, and Hunter would not inform him.
Business Ventures
In the early 2000s, Biden joined the board of directors for Amtrak, despite having no prior experience in the railroad industry. In 2006, he attempted to buy a hedge fund with his uncle, Jimmy Biden, allegedly at the behest of his father. The deal was unsuccessful, forcing Hunter Biden to take out a loan against his home to cover losses.
Burisma Holdings and Ukraine Scandal
In 2014, Hunter Biden joined the board of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian gas company linked to alleged corruption. His father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, was heavily involved in U.S. policy towards Ukraine, leading to concerns about a conflict of interest.
In May 2014, Biden was removed from the U.S. Navy Reserve due to cocaine use.
Controversies and Investigations
In 2015, Ukraine's then-Prosecutor General, Viktor Shokin, initiated an investigation into Burisma Holdings. However, he claims that the Biden administration pressured him to drop it. Joe Biden allegedly threatened to withhold $1 billion in U.S. aid if Shokin was not fired.
In 2020, a report by Republican senators alleged financial dealings between Hunter Biden, Burisma Holdings, and Chinese businessmen linked to corruption. The report also claimed that Hunter Biden paid for prostitutes and engaged in human trafficking.
Social Media Censorship and the 2020 Election
During the 2020 presidential election, the publication of an alleged email correspondence between Hunter Biden and a Burisma advisor by the "New York Post" sparked controversy. Twitter and Facebook briefly restricted access to the article, sparking allegations of censorship.
