Hero Talk Radio Host Saves Suicidal Caller's Life
Ian Lee, a presenter on UK talk radio station Talk Radio, played a crucial role in saving the life of a man who called the show while contemplating suicide.
Intervention and Support
Despite Chris, the caller, becoming increasingly incoherent due to the overdose, Lee managed to keep him on the line for over half an hour. The caller shared his struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and stated that he had run out of strength.
Lee skillfully extracted Chris's location and maintained conversation until emergency services could reach him. "I'm going to tell you this, Chris," Lee said during the exchange. "I don't want you to die tonight. I need to know what street you're on. I want you to go home tonight and speak to me tomorrow when the drugs wear off."
Lee emphasized his affection for Chris, saying, "You don't have to go out tonight because I love you. I love you, brother. I love you."
Location Tracking and Emergency Response
Chris was located on a Plymouth street and managed to stay conscious until paramedics arrived. An emergency services representative contacted Lee to inform him that Chris was safe.
Update and Appreciation
Lee tweeted to his listeners on December 20, 2018, sharing the details of the incident: "We had a call from a man who had taken a fatal overdose of drugs and was on the phone as he was dying in the street."
"We kept him on air, described his appearance and clothing, and got him an address which we passed on to the ambulance and police."
Lee expressed gratitude for the support from his listeners and urged people to seek help rather than suffer in silence.
Police Confirmation and Follow-Up
Inspector Kev Morley of Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that Chris had been rescued and taken to the hospital. He stated, "My officers have attended the scene and are continuing to engage with the caller. Sadly, this is not an uncommon call for us and with December being a very difficult month for many, we will be doing everything possible to ensure Chris receives the longer-term support he needs."
