It was in Blackpool that Anderson's musical aspirations took flight. In 1963, he formed his first band, The Blades, with schoolmates Barriemore Barlow, Jeffrey Hammond, and John Evan. Throughout the 1960s, the band underwent several name changes, including the John Evan Band, John Evan Blues Band, and John Evan Smash.
