Life and Education

Arabian Physician of Renown

Usaid ibn Abi Usaibia, an illustrious Arabian physician and biographer, was born into a noble family with a rich medical heritage. His grandfather and father held prominent positions as physicians.

Usaid's education spanned Egypt and Syria, where he sought knowledge under the guidance of the renowned Abd al-Latif. From 1227 to 1233, he studied in Damascus, where he was appointed chief physician of a hospital in 1234.

Royal Appointment and Later Life

Court Physician to the Emir

Two years after his appointment as chief physician, Usaid became the court physician to the emir in Sarhad, Syria. He held this position until his death in 1269.

Legacy as a Medical Historian

Compilation of Notable Physicians

Usaid's most significant contribution to medical history was his compilation of a comprehensive dictionary of renowned Muslim physicians. This work became the foundation for subsequent scholarly endeavors by Wüstenfeld, Leclerc, and numerous other researchers.

Preservation of Medical Knowledge

August Müller's complete edition of Usaid's text, published in Cairo (1882) and Königsberg (1884), ensures the preservation and accessibility of this invaluable source for historians of Muslim culture.
