Ignace Cotolendi: A Catholic Missionary and the First Bishop of Nanjing
Birth and Early Life
Ignace Cotolendi was born in Brignoles, Var, France, on March 23, 1630. As a young man, he pursued a religious vocation, becoming a Catholic missionary.
Founding of the Paris Foreign Missions Society
In 1658, Cotolendi played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris) alongside Alexandre de Rhodes, François Pallu, and Pierre Lambert de la Mothe. This missionary organization aimed to spread Catholicism in foreign lands.
Episcopal Appointment and Mission
In 1660, Cotolendi was ordained a titular bishop of Metellopolis and appointed vicar apostolic of Northeast China, Korea, and Tartary. Embarking on his missionary journey in 1661, he set out for Siam via Persia and India.
Illness and Untimely Death
Unfortunately, Cotolendi's health took a turn for the worse during his travels. He was forced to stop in India, where he succumbed to illness on August 16, 1662. Tragically, he never reached his intended destination, the diocese of Nanjing, China.
Legacy and Significance
Despite his untimely demise, Ignace Cotolendi's contributions to Catholicism were significant. As a co-founder of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, he played a vital role in spreading the Catholic faith around the world. His unwavering dedication and missionary zeal continue to inspire Catholic missionaries today.
