He made his professional debut in the 2003-2004 season, playing in the Coppa Italia against Sampdoria on December 3. In the 2004-2005 season, Abate was loaned to Napoli in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione, where he appeared in 29 matches and scored 2 goals. He then moved to Sampdoria in Serie A for the following season but was recalled before the start of the competition and ended up at Piacenza in Serie B, where he made 13 appearances. The next season proved to be more successful for Abate as he played 38 matches for Modena.

In the 2007-2008 season, Abate finally made his Serie A debut after being purchased by Empoli for €900,000. He scored his first goal in Serie A against Genoa on April 27, 2008. After Empoli's relegation, Milan brought Abate back for €2 million, only to loan him to Torino for the same fee. Despite an early ankle injury, Abate played 25 matches and scored 1 goal for Torino.

On June 24, 2009, Milan once again recalled Abate and included him in the squad for the upcoming 2009-2010 season for €2.55 million. He initially played as a backup midfielder but was eventually converted into a right-back by coach Leonardo Araújo. Due to his excellent performances, Abate signed a contract extension until 2014 on February 11, 2010. He continued to excel in the 2010-2011 season, helping Milan win the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia.

Abate has represented Italy at various youth levels and made his debut for the senior national team on November 11, 2011, in a friendly match against Poland, which Italy won 2-0. He was also selected for the UEFA Euro 2012, where Italy finished as runners-up. Abate played in the quarterfinals against England but was substituted by Christian Maggio. Although he missed the semifinals due to injury, he played in the final against Spain, where Italy suffered a 4-0 defeat.

From 2011 to 2015, Abate earned 22 caps for the Italian national team, scoring 1 goal.
