Early Life and Education
Stjepan Gjadrov, a renowned Croatian conductor and music pedagogue, was born in Croatia. He studied conducting at the Zagreb Music Academy under the tutelage of Milan Horvat. Subsequently, he pursued further training at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome under the guidance of Fernando Previtali.
Professional Career
In 1954, Gjadrov participated in the Besançon International Festival of Young Conductors, where he earned the top prize in the non-professional category. From 1957 onwards, he led the Croatian Institute of Music Orchestra. Additionally, he held the position of Artistic Director of the Maribor String Orchestra from 1994 to 2004.
Gjadrov's notable achievements include the premiere of Edison Denisov's "Crescendo e diminuendo" for harpsichord and twelve strings in 1967.
Teaching and Leadership
Gjadrov dedicated a significant portion of his career to teaching at the Zagreb Music Academy, where he joined the faculty in 1957. He held the rank of professor from 1966 onwards and retired in 2003.
Beyond the classroom, Gjadrov played a leadership role in the Croatian music community, serving as President of the Croatian Society of Musicians from 1977 to 1981.
