Childhood and Early LifeIgor Iosifovich Klass was born on November 26, 1939, in Odessa, Ukraine, into the family of Iosif Klass. His childhood was marked by the challenges of the Great Patriotic War, which he and his family narrowly survived.
Acting and Film Career
Despite his childhood experience, Klass initially pursued a different path. After graduating high school, he enrolled in the Riga Nautical College's navigation department. However, his dreams shifted after hearing Alexandra Pakhmutova's song "Geologists." He then decided to apply to the Leningrad Mining Institute but unexpectedly found himself accepted to the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music, and Cinema (LGITMIKA) instead.
Klass's first film appearance came in "Prinimayu Boy" while still a first-year student. He was immediately captivated by the magic of filmmaking, particularly the evocative smell of incense used in the production.
Graduating in 1965 with an acting degree and 1966 with a directing degree, Klass performed as an actor at the Tobolsk Drama Theater and as a director at the Abakan Theater.
His notable film debut occurred in "Zagovor Poslov," where he portrayed Felix Dzerzhinsky, earning praise for his striking resemblance. Director Andrei Smirnov cast him as the unique Anthel in "Nachalo Neveedomogo Veka," recognizing his ability to embody historical figures.
Villainous Roles
Klass became renowned for his mastery of villainous roles, appearing in approximately 100 films. Among his most memorable performances are the pirate Schweigert in "Pirates of the 20th Century," the ruthless Kapustin in "Drongo," and the murderer of Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya in "Bitva za Moskvu."
Personal Life
In the documentary "My Master Klass," Klass shared intimate details of his personal life, including an experience where he briefly died and witnessed a vision of Biblical prophet Elijah's testament.
He also recalled childhood experiences, his past lottery winnings, and his struggles with on-screen self-perception.
Teaching and Legacy
As a multi-generational educator, Klass fostered deep connections with his former students, providing mentorship and posing thought-provoking questions. His influence extended beyond his time in the classroom.
