Early Career

Stepanov began his football career in Latvia before catching the attention of scouts from Premier League clubs. Following the successful debut of Maris Pahars from Southampton, there was increased interest in Latvian players. Stepanov was invited to a training camp with Andrejs Rubins and played a friendly match against German club Mainz. However, the club did not offer him a contract.

Joining Arsenal

Despite not securing a contract with Mainz, Stepanov's luck changed when Tony Adams got injured while playing for the national team against France. Arsenal needed a quick replacement, and Stepanov's name came up. In September, the transfer and work permit were completed, and Stepanov joined the Premier League for a transfer fee of £1 million from Skonto. He joined Ukrainian player Oleg Luzhny in the team and initially had a promising start, scoring a goal in his first match against Ipswich Town in the League Cup.

Challenging Times at Arsenal

However, Stepanov's time at Arsenal took a turn for the worse during a match against Manchester United. The defense, consisting of Stepanov, Luzhny, and Grimandi, conceded six goals, including a hat-trick from Dwight Yorke. Arsene Wenger advised Stepanov to take a break and wait for his opportunity. Despite making only one appearance in that season, the shadow of that match haunted him throughout his time at Arsenal. He spent the next two seasons mostly on the bench.

Continued Career

In the summer of 2003, Stepanov went on loan to Belgian club Beveren, a partner club of Arsenal. There, he regained his form and fully prepared himself for the UEFA European Championship in 2004. After the tournament, he signed a contract with Grasshoppers as a free agent. Stepanov had successful seasons with the Swiss club, finishing third in the 2004/2005 season and fourth in the 2005/2006 season. However, he was eventually released from the club due to disciplinary issues.

Current Club

Stepanov then joined Danish club Esbjerg, where he has been playing ever since. In the previous season, he played in all 14 matches in the second round of the SAS Ligaen. In the current season, he has appeared in three matches so far. Despite facing challenges and setbacks throughout his career, Stepanov continues to pursue his passion for football with determination and resilience.
