Biography of Ildar Ibragimov
Early Life and EducationIldar Rifkatovich Ibragimov was born on August 16, 1967, in Kazan, a city with a rich chess tradition. He was a student of the Rashid Nezhmetdinov School and received coaching from R. Narullin, V. Voloshin, and S. Kuznetsov. Despite growing up in a neighborhood affected by criminal activity, Ibragimov was fortunate to be able to focus on his chess studies. He attended School No. 122, which had a special emphasis on the English language and did not tolerate any unruly behavior. However, his proximity to dangerous areas made Ibragimov appreciate the circumstances that allowed him to pursue his passion for chess.
Chess Career
After completing his education at the English language school, Ildar Ibragimov enrolled in the Kazan Power Engineering Institute (KFЕI) but ultimately decided to dedicate his youth to chess and did not finish his university studies. He followed the path of many players of his time and served in the army, participating in the strong championships of the Soviet Armed Forces. In 1991, Ibragimov shared 1st to 3rd places with Vladimir Kramnik and Andrei Harlov in a prestigious tournament for young masters. As a result, the Soviet team was formed, and Ibragimov became the World Youth Chess Champion.
Ibragimov reached the final of the USSR Chess Championship in 1991 and participated in the zonal tournament in 1993. His rating rose to 2550, and he earned the titles of International Master and then Grandmaster in 1993. He went on to win the Chigorin Memorial in 1994 and emerged victorious in strong tournaments in Vienna (1996) and Biel (1997). Ibragimov played for the Kazan team "TatTransGaz" and later for "Ladia," winning the Russian Team Chess Championship and the European Club Cup. He also competed in the finals of the Russian Cup (1997), the Kalmyk President's Cup (1998), and several Russian Chess Championships.
Move to the United States
In 2001, Ildar Ibragimov made the decision to move to the United States, where he exchanged his Russian citizenship for American citizenship. He settled in New Haven, Connecticut.
