Early Life and Revolutionary Activities
Born on January 24, 1777, in Granada, Spain, Rafael de Riego y Núñez was destined to play a pivotal role in the political landscape of the 19th century. At the onset of the Peninsular War, Riego served as an artillery lieutenant, earning distinction in the defense of Olivenza.
Persecution and Imprisonment
Upon the return of King Ferdinand VII, Riego's suspected Masonic affiliations led to his imprisonment in Valencia's Inquisition prison. The 1820 revolution liberated him, paving the way for his subsequent rise to prominence.
Presidency and Military Service
Following the death of Ferdinand VII, Riego, revered as a liberal, was elected President of the Cortes convened by Martínez de la Rosa. He rejoined the army, attaining the rank of Major General. Appointed Captain General of Valencia under Toreno's ministry, Riego headed a local junta during an uprising, but later participated in its suppression.
Ministerial Roles and Political Influence
In 1834, Riego served as Minister of War in Mendizábal's government. After the events of La Granja, he was elected to the Constituent Cortes and again held the position of Minister of War in Calatrava's government, briefly assuming the presidency of the Council of Ministers.
Later Political Career and Legacy
Ill health forced Riego to resign, but he returned to the Cortes. Regent Maria Christina appointed him Senator, and under Espartero's regency, he was reappointed President of the Cortes in 1841 and Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1842. With Espartero's fall in 1843, Riego retired and passed away in Valencia on January 26, 1846.
