Early Life and EducationBoris Grubert was born into a musical family in Latvia. His brother, Naum Grubert, was a renowned pianist. Boris began his musical journey at the Emil Darzins Music School in Riga, then continued his studies at the Central Music School in Moscow under Yuri Yankelevich and Zinaida Gilels. He completed his education at the Moscow State Conservatory under Leonid Kogan, graduating in 1978.
Competition Successes
Grubert's prodigious talent was evident early on. In 1975, he placed second at the Sibelius International Violin Competition in Helsinki. His first place at the All-Union Competition for Performers in Lviv in 1977 was a testament to his exceptional abilities. These successes paved the way for his triumphs at the Paganini International Competition in Genoa (1977) and the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow (1978), where he emerged as a top prize winner.
Career and Emigration
In the 1980s, Grubert emigrated from the USSR and settled in the Netherlands. He became a respected professor at the Amsterdam Conservatory, sharing his knowledge and skills with aspiring musicians.
Recordings
Grubert's repertoire includes a wide range of violin concertos and chamber works. He has recorded extensively for Western labels, collaborating with renowned Russian orchestras. His recordings of violin concertos by Paganini, Bruch, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Myaskovsky, Weinberg, and Arutyunyan are particularly notable. He has also recorded chamber works by Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Kara Karayev, among others.
