Early Life and Education
Moisei Samoilovich Vilenko was born in Ukraine on April 19, 1894. From 1914 to 1917, he studied composition and piano at the Petrograd Conservatory under Vasily Kalafati and Alexander Winkler.
Military and Artistic Work
In 1919, Vilenko joined the Red Army Theater and later played a pivotal role in establishing the Theater of the Red Army in Kharkiv (1920). He subsequently moved to Kyiv, where he was instrumental in founding the Kyiv Philharmonic (1924), the State Children's Theater (1924), and the Russian Drama Theater (1926).
Professional Achievements
From 1939 onwards, Vilenko served as the artistic director of the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Ukrainian SSR. He became a member of the Communist Party in 1944 and was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR in 1947.
Musical Compositions
Vilenko's compositions spanned diverse genres, including opera, ballet, musical comedy, and orchestral and piano works. His notable creations include "The Little Humpbacked Horse" (1935, opera), "Harvest Festival" (1948, ballet), "Ivasik-Telesik" (1949, children's ballet), "Sorochinsky Fair" (1936, musical comedy), and "Shelmenko the Orderly" (1962, musical comedy).
Personal Life
Vilenko married Serafima Ivanovna Kryzhanovskaya and adopted her son Mikhail, who became the father of composer Konstantin Vilenko.
