Early Life and Education

Born in 1952 in the Latvian village of Salaca, Krišjānis Kariņš went on to earn a degree in biology from the University of Latvia in 1975. He pursued his academic career by completing a doctoral degree from Moscow State University in 1986, followed by a doctorate in 1993.

Scientific Career

Kariņš began his scientific research in 1972 at various research institutes. In 1989, he became involved with the Committee for Environmental Protection, advocating not only for environmental issues but also for Latvia's separation from the Soviet Union.

Political Beginnings

In 1990, Kariņš was elected to the Supreme Council of Latvia as a member of the Popular Front, where he voted in favor of Latvia's independence. He subsequently became a member of the Green Party and served as Minister of Environmental Protection.

Parliamentary Experience

Elected to the 5th Saeima (parliament) in 1993 from the Green List, Kariņš did not participate in the elections for the 7th Saeima in 1999. He returned to politics in 2001, serving as a member of the Riga City Council for the Green Party. In 2002, he was delegated to parliament by the Union of Greens and Farmers.

Prime Ministerial Appointment

In 2019, following the resignation of Prime Minister Einars Repše, Kariņš became a surprise choice for the position. Despite having dual American and Latvian citizenship, he was sworn in as Prime Minister on March 9, 2019.
