Early Life and Education

Nikolai Fedorovich Gudz was born on August 20, 1931, in the village of Budishcha, Ukraine. He graduated from the Dnipropetrovsk Automobile Transport College in 1951.

Career in the Ministry of Internal Affairs

Early Assignments

Gudz's career in the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) began in 1951, when he joined the State Automobile Inspectorate (GAI). He served as a traffic inspector for seven years before completing his degree from the Moscow Machine-building Institute in absentia.

Rise Through the Ranks

From 1963 to 1966, Gudz headed the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Directorate of the GAI. In 1968, he became Chief of the MIA Department of Dnipropetrovsk Region, a position he held until 1974. He subsequently served as Chief of the MIA Department of Donetsk Region.

Deputy Minister and Minister

In 1977, Gudz was appointed Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs. In 1982, he succeeded Ivan Golovchenko as Minister of Internal Affairs of the Ukrainian SSR, a position he held until 1990.

Chernobyl Disaster Response

Gudz played a key role in organizing the response to the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. He coordinated efforts to evacuate civilians, secure the area, and contain the spread of radiation.

Post-Ministerial Career

After leaving the MIA, Gudz held various positions:
President of the All-Ukrainian Law Enforcement Fund "Pravozakhys"
General Director of the National Museum "Chernobyl"
Member of the Board of the MIA of Ukraine

Honorary President of the International Human Rights Protection Committee

Recognition and Awards

Gudz was awarded the rank of General of Internal Service of Ukraine in 2010 and General-Colonel of Internal Service in 1985. He was also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine.
