Biography of Ingrid Michaelson

Ingrid Ellen Michaelson, a New York indie-pop singer, was born on December 8, 1979. Her music has been featured in the soundtracks of several popular TV shows and series such as "Scrubs," "Grey's Anatomy," and "One Tree Hill," as well as in the advertising campaign for the fictional island "Old Navy's Fall 2007."

Early Life and Education

Ingrid was born into an intellectual and affluent family. Her father, Karl Michaelson, was a composer, while her mother, Elizabeth Egbert, was a sculptor, executive director, and chairperson of the board of directors for the Island Museum. Ingrid began playing the piano at the age of five and further developed her talent at the Third Music School of Manhattan and the Dorothy Delson Kuhn Jewish Community Center's Music Institute. She took vocal courses with Elizabeth McCallou, who had been working with her since middle school. Ingrid completed her studies at Staten Island Technical High School and Binghamton University.

Music Career

Ingrid's career took off with the creation of a musical theater group called "Children on Stage." In the fall of 2008, she toured Europe as the opening act for Jason Mraz, performing in England, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, and France, among others. Several of Ingrid's songs were featured in the TV series "Grey's Anatomy." Her song "The Way I Am" served as the soundtrack for the episode "Six Days" (Part 1, January 11, 2007), garnering attention from viewers. "Breakable" was featured in "Staring at the Sun" (November 16, 2006), and "Turn to Stone" in the episode "Corner of Your Heart." "Keep Breathing" was played during the Season 3 finale episode "Didn't We Almost Have It All" on May 17, 2007. Ingrid also covered Joshua Radin's song "Sky" in the 15th episode of Season 4, titled "Losing My Mind." "Giving Up" was included in the Season 4 finale episode "Freedom" on May 22, 2008. In the fifth season of the series "What a Difference a Day Makes," Ingrid's new version of her single "Turn to Stone" from her upcoming album "Everybody" was used on May 7, 2009. In addition, four of her songs appeared in the TV series "One Tree Hill." Some of her songs were also included in the soundtrack of "The Real World: Denver."

Public Appearances and Recent Work

Ingrid has made numerous appearances on VH1's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "The Blue Room at AT&T," "Live with Regis and Kelly," "Artists Den," and NPR's "Bryant Park Project." She also performed with Joshua Radin on "Last Call with Carson Daly." Most recently, Ingrid released the song "Be OK," which was featured in an advertisement for Bunny&Mott's apple juice, starring actress Marcia Cross. She collaborated with her friend Sara Bareilles on the song "Winter Song," which was included in the compilation album "The Hotel Café Presents Winter Songs." Several music videos have been made for Ingrid's songs, including one recorded during her performance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on December 9, 2008, and another featuring clips from the fifth season of "Grey's Anatomy." The song "Winter Song" was also included in the "Scrubs" soundtrack.
