Birth and Early Life

On October 19, 1829, in the Archangelsk province, a child was born to pious Psalmist Ilya and his wife Jodora. The newborn was so frail that his survival seemed unlikely. The parents hurriedly baptized him, hoping that if he died, he would find refuge in God's Kingdom. Miraculously, as the priest immersed the infant thrice in the baptismal water, color returned to his cheeks, his eyes sparkled, and from that day forward, the child grew stronger with each passing day.

Ilya, the Psalmist, being deeply pious, saw his son's miraculous recovery as a sign from heaven. Recognizing the potential within their child, the family instilled in young Ivan spiritual sensitivity and religious education.

Educational and Spiritual Growth

From his early years, Ivan displayed an affinity for the divine. He preferred the sanctuary of the church to the company of his peers, spending his time in prayer, study, and service to his large family. Despite initial struggles with literacy, Ivan's prayers for divine assistance bore fruit, as his understanding and memory improved dramatically. Subsequently, he excelled first as a student and later as a seminarian and student at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy.

Mystical Visions and Calling

Throughout his life, Ivan experienced numerous mystical visions, indicating his chosen path as a servant of God. While still an academy student, he envisioned himself officiating in a grand cathedral. Days later, he received an invitation to marry the daughter of the rector of the Andreyevsky Cathedral in Kronstadt, the very same cathedral he had seen in his vision.

Marriage and Priesthood

Ivan was a young graduate of the Theological Academy when he became the son-in-law of the Andreyevsky Cathedral's rector. Shortly after, he received ordination and became a priest of the cathedral. However, his marital life took an unexpected turn when he proposed to his wife, Elizabeth, a life of celibacy and service to the needy.

Unwavering Service and Devotion

Despite his wife's initial resistance, Ivan remained resolute in his commitment to serve God and humanity. He officiated the Sacred Liturgy daily, without exception. Afterward, he would venture into the slums of Kronstadt, offering solace, blessings, and whatever possessions he had to those in need. Funds from his own earnings were used to establish institutions for the poor, including a hospital, workshops, schools, and a monastery.

Healing and Miraculous Gifts

From a young age, Father Ivan possessed the gift of healing and miraculous abilities. One day, he encountered a young woman contemplating suicide. Through his compassionate words, he instilled in her the hope that led her to a path of redemption. In another instance, Father Ivan resurrected a stillborn child through his prayers, prompting the mother to exclaim, "God has chosen to resurrect the infant. A boy is born. The mother is alive."

Prophecies and Controversy

Father Ivan was also a prophetic seer. He foretold Russia's impending trials, condemning revolutionaries and nihilists for their attempts to undermine the Russian state and Orthodox faith. His outspokenness earned him the hatred of these groups, who plotted an unsuccessful assassination attempt against him.

Death and Legacy

Father Ivan died in 1908, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and healing. He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in 1964 and by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1990. The Russian people have always venerated him as a saint, and a Ioannovskiy Monastery featuring his miracle-working tomb was recently restored in St. Petersburg.
