Biography of Iosif Davitashvili

Iosif Davitashvili was a Georgian poet born on July 1 (July 13), 1850, in the village of Ruisi, Georgia. He was the son of a serf peasant and worked as a woodcarver. Davitashvili made his literary debut in the 1870s and was influenced by Georgian Sixtiers such as I. Chavchavadze, A. Tsaretieli, and others.

Davitashvili's poems depict the harsh life of peasants and craftsmen, criticizing the nobility, merchants, and imperial officials. Some of his notable works include "The Source of Happiness" and "Is this a Bright Time?" (1885), as well as "To Those Who Despise the Worker." He was the first Georgian poet to focus on the lives of working craftsmen, as seen in his poems "Songs of Craftsmen" (1878), "To the Worker" (1879), and "Our Time" (1881).

Iosif Davitashvili passed away on March 13 (March 25), 1887, in Telavi, Georgia.
