Early Life and Education
Josef Schnitter was born on October 6, 1852, in Novi-Bidzov, Austria-Hungary (now part of the Czech Republic). He pursued his education at the Technical University of Vienna, majoring in civil engineering.
Contributions to the Russo-Turkish War
In 1877, Schnitter migrated to the Russian Empire, where he embraced the Orthodox faith. During the Russo-Turkish War, he served as an engineer with the Imperial Russian Army, constructing pontoon bridges across the Danube and fortifications for the Siege of Plevna. His contributions earned him a sword of honor from General Eduard Totleben, the commander of the siege.
Architectural Legacy in Bulgaria
After the war, Schnitter settled in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the city's urban landscape. From 1886 until his passing, he served as the city's engineer and architect. He designed the first comprehensive master plan for Plovdiv, commissioned by Mayor Hristo Danov.
Later Years and Legacy
Josef Schnitter passed away on April 26, 1914, in Plovdiv. His legacy continued through his granddaughter, Maria Schnitter, who became a renowned professor of philosophy and history at Plovdiv University. Schnitter's contributions to the architectural and urban development of Plovdiv left an enduring mark on the city and the nation of Bulgaria.
