Political Career

Irakli Garibashvili is the current Prime Minister of Georgia, serving since February 22, 2021. He previously held the positions of Prime Minister (2013-2015), Minister of Defense (2019-2021), and Minister of Police and Public Order (2012-2013). Garibashvili is also the Chairman of the Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party (2013-2015).

Early Life and Education

Garibashvili was born in Tbilisi, Georgia. As a child, he pursued kickboxing. In 2004, he graduated from the Faculty of International Law and International Relations at Tbilisi State University. He concurrently studied at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne. In 2005, he completed his Master's degree in International Relations from Tbilisi University. Garibashvili is fluent in Georgian, Russian, English, and French.

Professional Background

Upon returning to Georgia in 2004, Garibashvili began working for companies owned by businessman Bidzina Ivanishvili. From 2004 to 2012, he held various management and executive roles at Kartu Group and Kartu Bank. He also served as the Director General of the Kartu International Charity Foundation from 2005 to 2012.

In 2012, Garibashvili played a key role in preparing the Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party for the parliamentary elections, which the party ultimately won. He became the Minister of Police and Public Order in Ivanishvili's government in 2012.

Prime Minister (2013-2015)

In 2013, Garibashvili was appointed as Prime Minister by Ivanishvili, becoming the youngest Prime Minister in Georgian history at the age of 31. During his tenure, he implemented a series of economic and political reforms.

Retirement and Return to Politics

Garibashvili resigned as Prime Minister in 2015. He served as an advisor to the regional projects of the Chinese company CEFC China Energy from 2018 to 2019. In March 2019, he returned to the Georgian Dream party to help resolve a political crisis.

Minister of Defense and Prime Minister (2019-Present)

In 2019, Garibashvili was appointed as Minister of Defense. After the resignation of Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia in February 2021, Garibashvili was nominated and approved by Parliament as the new Prime Minister.

Personal Life

Garibashvili is married to Nunuka Tamazashvili and has four children. His father-in-law was a former police general who was arrested during the presidency of Mikheil Saakashvili.
