Early Life and Education

Irina Farion was born in 1964 and graduated from the philological faculty of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in 1987, majoring in Ukrainian Philology.

Academic Career

Farion received her PhD in Philology in 1996 and her Doctorate in Philology in 2015. She has authored several monographs and articles on Ukrainian linguistics and received numerous awards, including the Oleksa Hirnyk Prize (2004) and the Boris Grinchenko All-Ukrainian Prize (2008).

Political Affiliation

Farion joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1988. She later claimed to have joined the party to "destroy it from within." In 2005, she became a member of the All-Ukrainian Union "Svoboda," an ultranationalist political party.

Parliamentary Career

Farion was elected to the Ukrainian Parliament in 2012 from a single-mandate constituency in Lviv Oblast. She served as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Higher Education of the Committee on Science and Education. In the 2014 snap parliamentary elections, she lost her seat.

Personal Life

Farion was married to Ostap Semchyshyn, with whom she had a daughter, Sofia. They are currently divorced. She resides in Lviv, Ukraine.
