Early Life and Education
Adelman was born to Jacob Max Glickman and Raya Etinzon. She pursued her education at the University of California, Berkeley, where she received her Bachelor's degree in 1949, Master's degree in 1950, and Doctorate in Philosophy in 1955.
Academic Career
Adelman began her teaching career at the University of Berkeley in 1955. She subsequently held positions at Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, and Northwestern University, where she became a full professor in 1966.
In 1977, Adelman served as Chief Economist at the Development Economics Research Center of the World Bank in Washington, D.C. She also worked as a visiting professor at the University of Maryland and as a research associate at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
In 1979, Adelman returned to Berkeley as a Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics. She was elected Vice President of the American Economic Association in the same year.
Contributions to Economic Modeling:
Irma Adelman played a pivotal role in computational general equilibrium modeling for economic planning. Collaborating with Cynthia Morris, she pioneered the application of multivariate analysis to the study of interrelationships between economic, social, and political forces in economic development.
