Early Life and Religious Vocation

In 1894, Irme Grivot joined the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary as Maria Hermine of Jesus. Inspired by the stories of Bishop Francesco Fogolla, who sought missionaries for China, she embarked on a journey to serve the Chinese Catholic community.

Missionary Work in China

Maria Hermine arrived in Taiyuan, China, in 1897 as part of a small group of priests and nuns. She dedicated her life to evangelization, caring for the poor and orphaned.

Boxer Rebellion

The Boxer Rebellion of 1899-1900 targeted Chinese Christians. Maria Hermine and a group of Catholics were arrested and sentenced to death.

Martyrdom and Canonization

Death as a Martyr

On July 9, 1900, Maria Hermine of Jesus was executed alongside her fellow Catholics. Her steadfast faith and unwavering courage earned her the title of martyr.

Beatification and Canonization

In 1946, Pope Pius XII beatified Maria Hermine of Jesus. In 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized her as part of a group of 120 Chinese martyrs.
