Isa Melikov: Azerbaijani Composer and Musical Innovator
Early Life and Musical BackgroundIsa Melikov was born on October 21, 1980, in Baku, Azerbaijan. His parents instilled in him a love of music from a young age. Isa mastered the lyrics of numerous international hits and attempted to play them on the piano from the age of six.
Musical Education and Career
In 1987, Isa enrolled in Baku's Secondary School 189. Three years later, he became a student at Baku's Music School No. 1, named after Vagif Mustafazade. In 1995, he entered Asaf Zeynally Music College, and in 1997, he pursued a degree at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts. He graduated with honors in 2001, specializing in conducting an orchestra of folk musical instruments. In 2003, Isa obtained a Master's degree in Arts.
Pioneer of R&B in Azerbaijan
Recognizing the need for fresh genres in Azerbaijan, Isa meticulously studied R&B music. In 2003, he composed "Q?m Ota?i," the first R&B song ever written in Azerbaijan, for the singer Elnara. Through this release, he aimed to popularize the genre within his country.
International Recognition and Success
In 2004, Isa joined the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors. In 2005, he fused Azerbaijani folklore (mugham) with R&B in the song "Uchduk," performed by Zamig. Isa's innovative work gained international recognition when he became a member of the Uzeyir Hajibeyov Baku Music Academy in 2006.
Producer Extraordinaire
In 2006, Isa produced "Academy," Azerbaijan's largest reality-television music show. In 2008, he founded the Baku Music Factory production company and became its principal producer. Under Isa's guidance, the factory's debut project, featuring the singer Aysel Teymurzade, placed third in the prestigious Eurovision Song Contest 2009.
Record-Breaking Achievements
Isa established the first official record label in Azerbaijan, "BMF Records," in 2009. In 2011, a BMF Records project featuring Nigar Jamal and Eldar Gasimov won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Running Scared." This triumph marked a historic milestone for Azerbaijan.
