Early Life and LineageIsaac I Komnenos was born into the prosperous and influential Komnenos family, which rose to prominence during the reign of Emperor Basil II. His father, Manuel Erotikos Komnenos, was a close associate of Emperor Basil II.
Inheritance and Wealth
Through his marriage to Catherine, the daughter of the last Bulgarian Tsar, Ivan Vladislav, Isaac I acquired substantial wealth and influence. However, the suspicious Empress Theodora stripped him of his governorship in Asia.
Anti-Emperor and Imperial Ascendancy
After Theodora's death, the landowning aristocracy rallied behind Isaac I as an anti-emperor in their rebellion against her successor, Michael VI Stratiotikos. In 1057, Isaac I was proclaimed emperor after defeating Michael VI at Nicaea.
Reforms and Decline
As emperor, Isaac I vigorously addressed the abuses that had persisted for three decades. However, he fell ill in 1059 and appointed Constantine Doukas as his successor. Two years later, Isaac I died as a monk.
