Princess of Brazil

Isabella was declared Princess of Brazil on August 10, 1850. She became the heir to the throne with the title of Her Imperial Highness the Imperial Princess of Brazil.

Regency of Brazil

Princess Isabella served as Regent of Brazil on several occasions: from 1871 to 1872, from 1876 to 1877, and from 1887 to 1889.

Abolition of Slavery

On May 13, 1888, Princess Isabella signed the Golden Law, which abolished slavery in Brazil. This act earned her widespread recognition and admiration.

Family and Education

Isabella was the eldest daughter of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil and Empress Teresa Cristina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. After the early deaths of her brothers, Isabella became the heir to the throne. To prepare her for her future responsibilities, Emperor Pedro II provided her with a comprehensive education. In 1855, he appointed Countess Barral as Isabella's governess on the advice of his sister, Princess Francisca.

Marriage

On October 15, 1864, Princess Isabella married Prince Gaston d'Orléans, the eldest son of the Duke of Nemours and grandson of King Louis Philippe I of France. The wedding took place in Rio de Janeiro.
