Born in Sydney, Australia, Marise Ann Payne graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales.

Entry into Politics

In 1982, Payne joined the Liberal Party and became the first woman to lead the Young Liberal Movement of NSW. She held various positions within the NSW Liberal Party for a decade.

Senatorial Career

In 1997, Payne was appointed to the Senate, becoming the first woman to represent NSW. She was re-elected in 2001, 2007, and 2013.
