Dorina van der Meulen: A Dutch Virtuoso
Early Life and EducationDorina van der Meulen embarked on her musical journey at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam under the tutelage of Davina van Wely. She further refined her skills at the Salzburg Mozarteum with the renowned violinist Sándor Végh.
International Recognition
In 1984, van der Meulen's exceptional talent was recognized when she emerged victorious at the Eurovision Young Musicians Competition in Geneva. This triumph propelled her onto the international stage.
Chamber Music Advocate
From 1997 to 2006, van der Meulen served as Artistic Director of the Delft Chamber Music Festival. Her passion for chamber music drove her to nurture young musicians and foster a vibrant musical community.
Collaborations with Renowned Artists
Throughout her career, van der Meulen has collaborated with eminent orchestras across Europe and the United States. Her conductors have included Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Roger Norrington, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Valery Gergiev. Van der Meulen's repertoire primarily focuses on contemporary works by composers like Shostakovich, Messiaen, Martinů, Lutosławski, Pettersson, Schnittke, Gubaidulina, and Tõnu. She has, however, also recorded classical masterpieces by Haydn, Mozart, Grieg, and Sibelius.
Global Outreach
Since 2009, van der Meulen has co-led the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra alongside Terje Tønnesen. This position has allowed her to extend her musical reach and connect with audiences around the world.
