Early Life and Origins

Isaatay Taymanov was born into the Berish clan of the Bayuly tribe. His origins lie in the vast Kazakh steppes between the Ural and Volga rivers, which were depopulated following the departure of the Kalmyk people to China in 1771.

Formation of the Bukey Horde

In 1801, Russian Emperor Paul I granted permission for 5,000 Kazakh families from the Junior Horde to resettle on vacant lands in the region. These lands formed the Bukey Horde, a vassal state of the Russian Empire.

Leadership of the Revolt

In 1836, Isaatay emerged as a leader of a Kazakh uprising against the Bukey Horde and Ural Cossacks. The revolt was sparked by the seizure of fertile land by the Bukey Horde's elite and the Ural Cossacks' control of lands along the Ural River.

Uprising and Scattered Forces

Armed bands led by Isaatay raided the villages of wealthy landowners and stole livestock throughout 1837. However, by the fall of that year, combined forces of Khan Zhangir, Ural, and Astrakhan Cossacks defeated the rebels, dispersing them throughout the steppe.

Defeat and Death

Isaatay and his ally, Makhambet Utepov, escaped across the Ural River and regrouped. But they were unable to withstand the forces sent against them from Orenburg and the Ural Cossacks. Isaatay Taymanov was killed in battle at the Akbulak River on July 12, 1838, marking the decline of the uprising. Most of the participants were later captured and punished.
