Ukrainian Writer and Composer

Sydir Vorobkevych was a Ukrainian writer and composer born in the town of Kitsman, Bukovina. As the son and grandson of priests, he was raised in a religious environment.

Education and Musical Training

Vorobkevych completed seminary in Chernivtsi in 1861. He pursued music studies privately in Vienna with Franz Krenn and later passed examinations at the Vienna Conservatory in 1868, earning diplomas as a choirmaster and vocal teacher.

Career in Music and Literature

While serving as a priest and choirmaster in Bukovina, Vorobkevych began his literary career in 1863 as a poet. He published a wide range of works, including poems, novellas, plays, and short stories. His 1901 poetry collection, "Над Прутом" (On the Prut), received a preface by Ivan Franko. As a composer, he created choral and vocal pieces, including settings of texts by Vasile Alecsandri, Mihai Eminescu, and Taras Shevchenko.

Pedagogical Contributions

Vorobkevych was also an influential music educator. He taught singing at the Chernivtsi Seminary from 1867 and at the Theological Faculty of Chernivtsi University from 1875. His pedagogical writings included a number of textbooks, and his students included renowned musicians such as Ciprian Porumbescu and Eusebius Mandyczewski.
