Ismail Ali Abukar: A Somali Political and Military Leader
Early Military CareerIsmail Ali Abukar, a Somali military officer, rose through the ranks of the Somali National Army. As a lieutenant colonel, he played a pivotal role in the October 21, 1969 coup that brought General Muhammad Siad Barre to power. Following the coup, he became a member of the Supreme Revolutionary Council of the Somali Democratic Republic and received a promotion to colonel.
Key Figure in Siad Barre's Regime
Abukar emerged as one of the key figures in Siad Barre's regime. In November 1971, he made a visit to the Soviet Union. He received the rank of brigadier general and held several high-level positions, including membership in the Central Committee and Politburo of the Somali Revolutionary Socialist Party, which was established in July 1976.
Political Appointments
From December 1979, Abukar served as Chairman of the People's Assembly, and on October 21, 1980, he became Chairman of the Political Committee for Emergency of Somalia. He also held the position of Third Vice-President of the Somali Democratic Republic.
Downfall and Conviction
On June 7, 1982, Ismail Ali Abukar and 16 other top officials were removed from all party and government posts and arrested. In 1988, after a trial that included former Foreign Minister Omar Arteh Ghalib, Abukar was sentenced to death. However, due to international pressure and human rights concerns, Siad Barre commuted his sentence to life imprisonment.
