Ismaïl Omar Guelleh: The Second President of Djibouti
Ismaïl Omar Guelleh has served as the second President of Djibouti since May 8, 1999, succeeding his uncle, Hassan Gouled Aptidon.
Early Life and Career
Guelleh's family immigrated to Djibouti from Ethiopia in the 1960s. He joined the police force and was appointed head of the secret service upon Djibouti's independence in 1977.
Ascension to Presidency
In April 1999, Guelleh was nominated as Aptidon's successor in the presidential election. He emerged victorious, winning 73% of the vote. In 2005, he was re-elected with 100% of the vote in an uncontested election.
Continued Re-Elections
In the 2011 election, Guelleh won with over 80% of the vote, despite facing other candidates. His success continued in the 2016 election, where he secured over 85% of the vote and extended his presidency.
