Early Life and Education
Satu Taavitsainen was born in Juankoski, Finland, on April 7, 1974. Her great-grandfather, Pekka Heikkinen, was the Chairman of the Agrarian Union (now Centre Party) from 1919 to 1940 and served as Minister of Trade and Industry.
In 1991, Taavitsainen graduated from Kuopio's Linnanpelto High School. She continued her education at the Alkio College in Jyväskylä, where she earned a degree in Journalism in 1995. Later, she pursued a degree in Nursing from the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (JAMK), graduating in 1999. In 2006, she obtained a Master of Health Sciences degree from the University of Jyväskylä.
Parliamentary Career
Taavitsainen's political career began with her election to the Finnish Parliament (Eduskunta) in 2007 from the Northern Savo constituency. She served until 2011, when she was not re-elected. However, she returned to Parliament in 2015 from the Savo-Karelia constituency.
Throughout her tenure as an MP, Taavitsainen has focused on issues affecting rural Finland, particularly in the areas of agriculture and healthcare.
Party Leadership
In 2018, Taavitsainen was elected Deputy Chairperson of the Centre Party at the party's congress in Sotkamo. She is the first woman to hold this position in the party's history.
Personal Life
Taavitsainen is married to farmer Harri Kärkkäinen. She was previously married to Mikko Torppavirta until 2007. Taavitsainen and Kärkkäinen have two children.
