Early Life and Career
Ivan Prokofyevich Adushkin was born on June 23, 1916, in the village of Simkino in present-day Mordovia, Russia. His father, a former laborer, had fought in the Civil War and lost his life. Adushkin worked as a shepherd, lumberjack, and tractor operator before becoming a transport brigade foreman in a collective farm.
Military Service
In 1937, Adushkin enlisted in the Red Army. He completed military training and participated in the Soviet-Finnish War as a tank driver on a BT-7 tank, sustaining a serious injury. He joined the Communist Party in 1940.
World War II
With the outbreak of World War II in 1941, Adushkin returned to active duty. After completing armored vehicle training in 1943, he fought at Stalingrad and Kirovograd. During the battle of Stalingrad, he famously shot down an enemy aircraft using a tank gun.
Heroic Exploits in Western Bukovina
Adushkin distinguished himself during the offensive battles in Western Bukovina from March 21-30, 1944. In a battle for the city of Chernivtsi, he and his tank crew repeatedly repelled enemy attacks, destroyed numerous enemy vehicles, and captured a large number of prisoners. For his extraordinary bravery, Adushkin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on April 26, 1944.
Post-War Life
Towards the end of the war, Adushkin was wounded and retired from active service in 1945. He settled in Ternopil, Ukraine, where he lived and worked until his passing on January 8, 1975.
Legacy
Adushkin was a highly decorated war hero who received numerous honors, including the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union. He was also made an honorary citizen of the cities of Chernivtsi in Ukraine and Sliven in Bulgaria. His memory continues to be revered by the people of his homeland.
