Mexican Politician with Leftist Ideology: Luisa María Alcalde Luján
Luisa María Alcalde Luján is a prominent Mexican politician known for her leftist views. She holds the position of Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, appointed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador after the 2018 elections.
Early Life and Education
Alcalde was born to union leaders Arturo Alcalde and Berta Luján Uranga. She studied law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, graduating in 2011. She later earned a master's degree in public policy and labor law from the University of California, Berkeley.
Political Career
Alcalde's political journey began with her involvement in protests against the removal of Andrés Manuel López Obrador as head of government of the Federal District in 2005. She also participated in the "Cactus Revolution," demonstrations by Obrador's supporters against alleged fraud in the 2006 presidential elections.
Initially a member of the leftist Citizen Movement party, Alcalde joined the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) in 2011. She was appointed national coordinator for youth and students affairs within the party. In 2012, she was elected as a federal deputy to the LXII Legislature of the Mexican Congress, representing Citizen Movement. She served in the Chamber of Deputies until 2015.
Ministerial Appointment
At the age of 31, Alcalde was appointed by López Obrador as Minister of Labor and Social Welfare. She took office on December 1, 2018.
Policy Priorities
As Minister, Alcalde has prioritized raising the minimum wage, improving working conditions, and combating precarious employment and unemployment. She has also launched the "Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro" (Youth Building the Future) initiative to create employment opportunities for young people.
