Biography of Ivan Gerasimov
Russian Soviet military commander, Army GeneralIvan Alexandrovich Gerasimov was a Russian Soviet military commander, known for his distinguished military career. He was born on August 8, 1921. Gerasimov was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, three Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of the Red Star, the Order "For Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR" of the 3rd degree, the Medal "For Courage," and several foreign awards.
Gerasimov's military career began during World War II. He served as a tank platoon commander and later as the commander of a tank company in the 15th Mechanized Division. He displayed great bravery and leadership during the battles in Bessarabia and Skulyany, where he successfully defended against the enemy's superior forces.
Gerasimov's valor and strategic prowess led to his promotion to the rank of major. He continued to serve in various tank units, participating in major battles on the Northern Caucasus and the Kursk Bulge. He played a crucial role in the liberation of Kiev, leading his tank unit in a successful assault on the city.
After the war, Gerasimov continued to rise through the ranks of the military. He commanded a division, an army, and the North Group of Forces. He served as the commander of the Kiev Military District for almost 10 years. In the final years of his military service, he held the position of the Commander-in-Chief of the Southwest Direction.
Aside from his military achievements, Gerasimov was actively involved in politics. He was a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine and a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
In his later years, Gerasimov dedicated himself to the welfare of war veterans. He became the head of the Organization of War, Labor, Military Service, and Law Enforcement Veterans of Ukraine. Under his leadership, the organization initiated several laws in Ukraine to improve the status and social protection of veterans.
Gerasimov passed away in Moscow and was buried there. His military career and contributions were honored with numerous awards and recognitions, including the highest honor of Ukraine, the title of "Hero of Ukraine" and the "Golden Star" Order, presented to him by the President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, on the 55th anniversary of Ukraine's liberation.
