Early Life and Career
Ivan Klementiev was born in 1960 in the village of Buntiki, Latvia, which was then part of the Soviet Union. He began his canoeing career in 1975 and quickly rose through the ranks. By 1979, he had earned the title of Master of Sports.
International Success
In 1981, Klementiev joined the Soviet national team and embark on a successful international career. Between 1985 and 1994, he won seven World Championships in the single canoe event, including one title in the 10,000-meter distance. He also captured an Olympic gold medal and two Olympic bronze medals during this period.
Political Career
After retiring from competitive canoeing, Klementiev entered politics. He served as a member of the Riga City Council from 2001 to 2005, representing the Harmony Party. In 2006, he was elected to the Latvian Parliament, where he has served ever since.
