Early Life and Education

Ivan Kostov was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. He briefly attended the Kremenchug Flight School for Civil Aviation in 1970. In 1974, he graduated with a degree in political economics from the Karl Marx Higher Economic Institute. He further pursued his education at Sofia University, earning a degree in mathematical modeling of economic processes in 1981.

Political Career

Kostov's political career began in 1990 when he served as Minister of Finance. He was elected to the National Assembly in 1991 and served in various terms until 2013. From 1994 to 2001, he led the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) party.

Premiership: 1997-2001

In 1997, the UDF formed a coalition that won the parliamentary elections, and Kostov became Prime Minister. His government implemented market reforms and pursued integration into NATO and the European Union.

Downfall and Departure from UDF

In 2001, the UDF performed poorly in the parliamentary elections, prompting Kostov's resignation as leader of the party. He later established a new party, Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria (DSB), in 2004.

Democracy Fund Scandal

In 2003, a scandal involving the Democracy Fund emerged. Russian businessman Mikhail Chernoy accused Kostov of extorting money from him for the 2001 election campaign. The allegations resulted in a decline in Kostov's party's electoral performance. However, it was later revealed that Chernoy had fabricated the accusations.

Later Career

Kostov continued to lead DSB until 2013. He remained active in Bulgarian politics, serving as an MP and participating in public debates on economic and political issues.
