Early Life and Education

Jean Videnov was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. He graduated from MGIMO in Moscow in 1985 with a degree in International Economic Relations.

Political Career

Bulgarian Socialist Party

In 1983, Videnov joined the Bulgarian Communist Party. He became the leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) in 1991, succeeding Alexander Lilov.

Prime Ministership (1995-1997)

After the BSP's victory in the 1994 elections, Videnov became Prime Minister. His government faced allegations of incompetent financial policies that led to a severe economic crisis. However, it also managed to pay off $2.1 billion of Bulgaria's foreign debt.

Economic Crisis and Resignation

By the winter of 1996-1997, Bulgaria was experiencing hyperinflation. The government declared its inability to service its foreign debt. Public discontent grew as salaries plummeted. On November 4, 1996, 19 members of the BSP leadership demanded Videnov's resignation, but the government resisted. Protests led by the Union of Democratic Forces eventually forced Videnov to step down on December 21, 1996. He was succeeded as Prime Minister and BSP leader by Georgi Parvanov.

Post-Political Career

After leaving politics, Videnov became a professor at a private university in Plovdiv. He later left the BSP in 2009 and became an ideologue for the youth Communist movement "Che Guevara."

Personal Life

Videnov is married to Katalina Videnova and has a son named Vasil Videnov. He is fluent in English, French, Russian, and Arabic.
